[From preface] Who Was Who in American Art was born of a practical need for a comprehensive reference tool for our own research and of our desire to share that information with anyone interested in the history of American fine arts. Since the focus of our research is on the artists active from the last quarter of the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, and since that period is also of great interest to a vast number of researchers, collectors, dealers, curators, and historians, we felt this book would also be a useful contribution to the field of American art. We found ourselves in agreement with the many researchers who considered the few existing biographical dictionaries of artists to be inadequate. Based primarily upon previous dictionaries, such works often repeat misspellings, wrong dates, and other inaccurate information. The nearly 25.000 biographical entries in this book were compiled from the original thirty volumes of the American Art Annual ( 1898-1933) and its subsequent four volumes under the title of Who's Who in American Art (1935-1947). These thirty-four volumes have been regarded as our most accurate source of biographical data on American artists active from the late nineteenth century through the mid twentieth century. The Annual's reputation is based largely on the fact that it is the only source whose information has come directly from the artists themselves.
